On Wednesday 13 August, the Secondary Athletics Carnival becomes the third big event of the year.
Students from each year group wait in Home Room for the teachers to do the roll before hopping on the bus.
The good mood spreads along the students on all three buses, as they socialise among themselves.
The carnival is held on a giant oval at the Geraldton Little Athletics Centre in Wonthella.
Most are familiar with it, while some are curious to explore. On our arrival, live music is playing.
Mr Santos is the announcer, ready to announce winners.
Each year group is sent off to their particular event rotation, the boys separately to the girls.
Mrs Lochner is our teacher (Year 8 girls) for all events. Some of her best moments are attempting the greatest shotput demonstration, the most cheers at long jump and the the best queen wave.
When it come to lunchtime, all year groups return to the house tents. Those who ordered lunch retrieve the bags from the staff members. Others play in the sunshine and socialise. Soon lunch ends and students return to their allocated teachers.
The 400m race begins with few people from each year group showing up at the start line.
Some come along to support friends.
After the 400m race is the 100m race, which most students participate in.
The relays are the last event of the day. The year groups from Alpha and Omega form teams of four boys and four girls. Both boys and girls start at the same time.
During the carnival, I received the following advice from Mr de Vries for long jump: “Put one foot in front of the other very fast in a short amount of time and fly like a bird. But realistically, you leap like a frog.”
Mr Bosker, our Interim Principal, says that he spent most of the time talking to parents and he loved the level of participation. The long jumps from each contestant were incredible, and the sight of the Year 7 boys sprinting across the field was amazing, as well as Mrs Lochner’s demonstration of the shotput.
Mr Boase said he loves that the carnival because it’s fun, it’s nice being outside and there is a high level of student participation.
Mia M says that she loves the vibes, the competition, the people and the fitness, as well as competing.
Skye D says that she loves the atmosphere and cheering for her friends.
She loves the exercise and supporting others.
Addi P says the the event is fun and she loves to cheer on her friends.
