In preparation for the future, Year 9 students are being equipped to take their place as responsible voters.
Each Year 9 class participated in a ‘polling day,’ with students casting their votes after thoroughly researching the policies of the key political parties expected to compete in the next Federal election.
Humanities and Social Sciences Teachers Mr John Tilinger and Mrs Wendy Love helped create an accurate polling place atmosphere, which included ‘democracy sausages’ from the BBQ and mock electoral officers and candidates.
“The Civics and Citizenship curriculum is centered around Australia’s democratic system and values. Students have learnt that voting shapes the nation and affects daily life. This means that being an informed voter empowers Christians to better love their neighbours.” Mr Tilinger said.
“Students are also asked to analyse a range of information sources to work out who they would vote for and why.
“Elections are an important part of our nation because they give voters an opportunity to have their say in how Australia should be run.
“Some students in the class changed their voting preference during the course because they researched the party and found it didn’t align with values that were important to them.”
A big thank you to staff who assisted and to parent helper Mrs Kirsten Cox, who cooked the very popular election sausage sizzle.
