Learning how to make real coffee at school is making it easier for students to find part-time work in hospitality.
Each Thursday morning before school, the Food Science and Technology room is pumping as enthusiastic year 10s and 11s take orders and practice making a range of beverages for staff.
Food Science and Technology teacher Mrs Sonja Lochner is teaching them basic barista skills which includes take away flat white, latte, mocha, chai latte and dirty chai for $2.50. Each cup arrives with a cookie – freshly baked by year 11s – placed on top.
“The students are very motivated and eager to learn because it’s a skill they can add to their curriculum vitae,” she said.
“They are quick learners and many are even practising at home during the week which makes parents happy.
“Barista skills open doors for work in waitressing and cafes, so it’s something extra students have on their resume to impress employers.”
