Above all, train for character

Well done to all of the students who participated in the Secondary Interhouse Cross Country Carnival on Tuesday.

Every race scorecard per house was filled, due to high participation, which resulted in a very close competition.

Will Alpha take the shield this year, or will last year’s winner Omega mount a successful title defence?

Character in sport is more important than skill

Andre Steenekamp, Director of Sport and Outdoor Education

Character in sport is more important than skill.

Our students demonstrated this at the carnival, with exceptional teamwork and support for peers, while the fruits of Learning God’s Way were on display.

Unity was evident throughout the day.

Hats off to the senior students and House captains for raising the bar in this area and leading from the front.

The results of every carnival are double checked afterwards and the winning house will be announced at the next Secondary assembly.

Congratulations to all of the individual medal recipients, listed below, who now have the opportunity to represent the College at the Associated and Catholic Colleges Cross Country in Perth on Thursday 1 June.

Pre-Primary class in cross country debut

By Johan Boonzaier
Head of Primary Physical Education

The College was blessed with wonderful weather on Monday and perfect conditions for our annual Primary Interhouse Cross Country Carnival.

Participation was at an all-time high and the enthusiasm the students showed was even greater.

As always, team spirit and sportsmanship could be seen during every race.

The Sports Department would like to congratulate all of the Primary students who competed and did their best.

The College appreciated the support from the parents attending and all the volunteers.

A special mention must go to the Pre-Primary class who run in their first official cross country event.

They ran like champions and looked adorable while doing it.

Once again, thank you to all who contributed.

To God be the glory.

Students experience life in the trenches

By Huia Woods-Smith
Humanities and Social Sciences Teacher

On Friday 12 May, the Year 9 Humanities and Social Sciences class, together with Year 11 History students, visited the Gallipoli Trench Project (Leane’s Trench), near Mullewa.

Leane’s Trench is a 120-metre long and two-metre deep replica trench of one taken by the Australian 11th Battallion on 31 July 1915 in Turkey during World War I.

It is named after the commanding officer who led the successful attack, Captain R. L. Leane.

The Captain and a number of soldiers under his command volunteered for the Australian War effort from Western Australia and the Mid West in particular.

The attack itself was known as a “please shoot me stunt” by the ANZACs.

Engineers laid a series of mines and 200 Australians charged into the chaos after detonation.

From the time of arrival to the end of the trench tour, students experienced a loud re-enactment by volunteers, Chris Cox and Mark Long of the Living History Project.

There was yelling (volunteers) and simulated gun-fire/bombardment, along with tears (students), giving students an idea of life in the trenches during the war – albeit without the decomposing bodies, rats,  rain, dysentery and bombardment of live rounds.

Wellbeing Corner: celebrating self-care

Year 12 Wellbeing Activities for Term 2

By Louanne Hardy
Student Support Counsellor

With the mid-term exams approaching, Year 12 students have been looking at the importance of self-care. As the name suggests, it is all about caring for yourself to ensure that both your physical and emotional needs are met.

This term we are putting self-care into practice with a few wellbeing activities.

The students had fun listening to a guest speaker, Mrs Silvester, share her knowledge and experience around selecting the right ball gown or suit for this year’s Year 12 Ball.

According to Mrs Silvester, it’s all about colour! Then you can focus on the fabric of the dress or suit and, of course, your personal style.

Here are some photos of our students having fun finding out what colours look extra amazing on them!

Some of the other activities planned in the next few weeks are: mindful stretching, drum beat session and wheelchair basketball.

Watch this space for more photos!

Food production: Hands to the plough

By Kelly Harrington
Wholistic Land Management Coordinator

Year 6 students have put their hands to the plough, sowing this year’s wheat crop on the College campus.

Students companion planted with field peas and sunflowers.

Let’s pray for a bountiful harvest.

Roll-out of new iPads begins

By Andrew Beard
Information Communications Technology Manager

There has been a buzz of excitement from the Pre-Primary to Year 3 classes over the past few weeks as they received new iPads in their classrooms.

The Pre-Primary to Year 2 classes received a fleet to share and will use them for educational outcomes that include Mathletics, Reading Eggs and online learning.

The roll-out is part of the College’s commitment to upgrade Information Technology infrastructure in order to maximise student learning and development outcomes.

Each Year 3 student received an iPad, which includes a physical keyboard, to replace their aging laptop.

Year 3 students will keep their iPad for use in the classroom for the remainder of primary school.

The iPads are perfect for this age group as the College will have access to thousands of free educational apps that can be instantly loaded on to their devices.

The camera can be used to take photos of what they are learning, or as a scanner to capture a digital copy of their handwriting or artwork.

Where appropriate, students can use the video or microphone to record their ideas as an alternative to writing.

Teachers will also have full control over the devices to manage the students online, including the ability to lock and observe their screens, lock their device into apps and websites and turn off spelling and grammar autocorrect.

I was invited into the Year 3 classrooms to help students understand the rules and how to use the devices properly.

We all had some fun at the end, playing music with Garageband and pointing the iPads into the sky seeing virtual planets, using the Skyview app.

FootballWest holds junior clinic

By Mathew Adams
Physical Education Assistant & Soccer Coordinator

FootballWest Community Participation Officer Tanya Amazzini and FFA A-Level Coach Juan Propato ran in-school soccer sessions this week for students in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6.

Sessions were designed to give all students a chance to learn some of the fundamental skills of the game, in a fun and competition-free environment.

Students enjoy the opportunity to be involved in these events.

A big thanks to FootballWest for making it possible.
