Remembrance Day Assembly
We had a wonderful Remembrance Day Assembly at the College on Wednesday morning.
Mr Gavin Hirschhausen, Principal, was MC for the occasion and spent time speaking to students about the origin of Remembrance Day:
“At 5.00am on 11 November 1918, three German government representatives accepted the Armistice terms presented to them by an allied commander, General Foch of the French Army. The demands of the Armistice included the withdrawal of German forces to the east bank of the Rhine within 30 days; immediate cessation of warfare; and surrender of the German fleet and all heavy guns with no further negotiations until the signing of the peace treaty.
The armistice became effective at 11.00am the same day, and as the guns fell silent on the Western Front in France and Belgium, four years of hostilities ended.
11 November is universally associated with remembrance of those who had died in the First World War. This conflict had mobilised over 70 million people and left between nine and 13 million dead and as many as one third of these with no grave. The allied nations chose this day and time for the commemoration of their war dead.
The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month attained a special significance in the post-war years and became universally associated with the remembrance of those who had died in the war.
On the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, a minutes’ silence is observed and dedicated to those soldiers who died fighting to protect their nations.
In Australia and other allied countries, including New Zealand, Canada and the United States, 11 November became known as Armistice Day – a day to remember those who died in World War One.
After World War Two, the Australian Government agreed to the United Kingdom’s proposal that Armistice Day be renamed Remembrance Day to commemorate those who were killed in both World Wars. Today the loss of Australian lives from all wars and conflicts is commemorated on Remembrance Day.”

Remembrance Fly Over
On the 11th day at the 11th hour, Paul Pette and two friends flew a flight formation in honour of our students, Kingsley, Iris-May & Charlton Hoare and their family called the CHARLTON FORMATION over the Geraldton RSL (we could hear the planes here at school during our Assembly).
The children’s grandfather Brett Rowland Charlton was a Lance Corporal in the Australian regular army as a dog handler/tracker in the Vietnam War. Sadly he sadly passsed away on the 26th of October 2020.
Music News
Music Count Us In
On Thursday morning last week, students from Pre-Primary through to Year 6 participated in Music Count Us In. We watched a live-stream in the Hall together, and joined in with thousands of students across Australia to sing the same song at the same time. It was very cool to see some local Geraldton schools perform on the live-stream at Ellendale Pool.
Geraldton City Band Visit
On Friday, the Geraldton City Band performed a Lunchtime Concert at the College. Lots of students came to listen and joined in with some favourites including ‘Mamma Mia’ and ‘The Greatest Showman’. It was also exciting to have some friends from Turtle Cove come across the road to visit us. The Geraldton City Band has lots of brass and percussion instruments. Did you know that you can learn these at school?! [Fun Fact: Did you know our Music Teacher, Mr Joshua Gibson, is the Geraldton City Band Director/Conductor??]
Instrumental Music Program 2021
Did you know that students have an opportunity at school to learn a musical instrument from a specialist tutor? Students can learn instruments including trumpet, trombone, clarinet, flute, saxophone, piano, guitar, drums and voice. As students develop their skills, there are also lots of opportunities to participate in extra-curricular performances and ensembles, including a combined schools Concert Band. Year 3/4 Recycling
We have been focusing on caretaking the Earth and how we can put ‘refuse, reduce, reuse and recycle’ into action.
In light of Christmas we are thinking of things that can bring joy without impacting creation.
We ripped no longer loved t-shirts and sheets from Op Shops into strips and spent time weaving coasters for vases, little rugs for pets, wall hangers or some students turned the project to basket weaving.

Kindy News
This term, we have learnt that it doesn’t matter what you have, or how big you are, we can make a difference by using what God has given us. We brainstormed what we could make to sell to our families, raising $205.00, which will bless children and families in poorer countries through buying gifts of a goat, chicken, community school classes, and water for handwashing through TEAR Australia.
Kindy students made and sold apricot, chocolate and gingernut balls. They also cut out thank you tags to glue onto the paper bags.
We also harvested our potato patch in the school garden this week, which was like finding treasure! Mrs Harrington brought in her fryer to make yummy hot chips!

Congratulations!
The WA Motocross State Titles were held over three events (Wanneroo, Chidlow & Bunbury) throughout the season with three races at each event. Addison Orr (Year 5) competed in two different titles and is now the Under 12 Girls Small Wheel Champion. She was also 7th in the Under 12, 65cc Championship (this class was all boys, except her)!
Addi’s older brother Mackinnley (Year 7) also raced the State Championship Series and came 9th in the Under 16, 250cc class.
Well done to both of you (and Mum and Dad for supporting your sporting passions).

Library Officer Position available
Assisting staff, students and community members with queries, selection and location of resources is the main focus of this position. Previous Library experience preferred, including familiarity with a Library Management System (i.e. Oliver). You will have strong customer service skills, an excellent work ethic and advanced computer skills.
The position is permanent part-time (eighteen hours per week) during school term time.

Do you love to sing?? We need singers for Carols by Candlelight this year, which will be an online event – so everything will be filmed.
Practice next Wed 18/11, 7.30-8.30pm at Geraldton City Band Rooms in Durlacher Street with City Band (QEII Centre). Then the following Wed 25/11 will be singing/filming at Strathalbyn Christian College with City Band 7-9pm. The more the merrier so feel free to invite friends who love to sing. Wear red/white/black on filming day. 😀
